How many is 2MANYDJS?

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Frankly, after seeing these videos from Halloween, I don’t even know if there is such a thing. Well, actually, strike that, reverse it and let’s start at the very beginning, incidentally, it’s a very good place to start. In case you’re from Mars and don’t know who 2ManyDJs are here’s a quick recap: they’re Belgian, they’ve been remixing and rocking your souls for over ten years (as part of the infamous Soul Wax) and they’re bonkers. They recently performed at Hard Fest Halloween in the Hard Haunted Mansion in LA last month. Yes, their DJing was pretty excellent and yes, they are some of the global mashup propogaters and their live show really reflects that. Not only are the album covers of all the songs they play featured on a big screen behind them but the covers are animated and they splice in an out as the songs in the mashup cross over. Brilliant? Yes. Entertaining? Of course. So amazing and funny and game changing? You bet your sweet cottontail.

major-lazer-album1.jpg

A little trippy and sometimes creepy, the way Major Lazer’s boobies bop to the music or Donna Summer’s foot bounces on the beat,

Dolly Parton gets her 9 to 5 out

and the cop walks out onto the parking lot of Dirty Deeds, Done Dirt Cheap will make you smile.

Plus, it’s fun to guess what’s coming next, whether your que is the hint of a back beat or the bare background of a familiar album cover flashing for an instant. This set satiates the music nerd in all of us. For me personally, I wish I could just post up in an eight by eight room with my back against one wall and have this playing on the opposite wall. I might lose my mind, have my face melted off or come out with the answer to world peace. Any which way, I’d be better off. So, peeps these videos and judge for yourself, just try and keep your face intact.

Check out these links to 4 of the best clips of the night. PS - the last one is the best, cause I can’t remember the last time Axl Rose weighed less than 200 lbs and this rendition brings me baaaack.

All joking aside, that man is the father of any and all children I will ever have. The world deserves something as epic as a P. van Peebles/A. Rose mashup. What you know about THAT, 2ManyDJs??

Nostalgia

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

As I lay in bed on this disgustingly dreary day I think back a few years  and wonder what exactly I would be doing on a day much like this. And a flood of “girly” toys invade my membrane. Close your eyes and talk a walk backwards with me….ahhh there it is the classic “IT” girl Barbie and oh look everyones favortie petite delight Polly Pocket and wait…can it be….Baby Alive the miraculous doll that not only ate & drank BUT pooped on her own? All of these toys bring up such sweet memories of a time when it was cool for a girl to be a girl and your imagination was your best toy (with the aid of a Cabbage Patch Doll of course). And let us not forget the very embodiment of all things feminine the board game that allowed you to live out your every dream Pretty Pretty Princess! Hope all you fellow girlie girls enjoy this little bitty trip down memory lane :)

The Art Whore

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

A few years back I was given the opportunity to meet and eventually work with a very talented artist by the name of Ami Vega. A true New Yorker through and through Miss Vega’s love and appreciation for the arts (and NYC) was present in EVERYTHING she did. I had never seen someone transition art forms so seamlessly. She could paint, sculpt, photograph, mold, draw, the list goes on and ON. I came to witness the beauty of Ami V through the lens first. She was able to bring to life all the crazy ideas in my brain. Everything I said I wanted like a genie POOF! she made appear. We worked together for about 2 years and most of my portfolio was shot by her. During those years I saw her prints hung in little cafes around the West Village & would get excited everytime I came into contact with one. As Ami’s focus changed direction she began to take on different projects. She started up a website MyBlkBook with friend and fellow artist Gretchen Nieves. She began the WMN of Art collective which is a project focusing on notorious WMN in history such as Amelia Earhart, Cleopatra, and Frida Kahlo and more recently she has taken on the task of nail artist. Her nail designs are nothing short of unique. Seeing as how Miss Vega is a modern artist who strives to never forget her artistic forefathers her nail designs are tributes to the Great’s such as pop artist Roy Lichenstein & street artist Keith Haring. Perhaps Miss Vega’s greatest contribution to date will the be little one she’s dropping in the next month or so. I admire her tenacity and drive so much though because despite currently being 8 months pregnant Ami is still very busy at work. She has undertaken a new project that I really can’t say too much about just know it involves custom made My Little Ponies…….a great artist in every sense and an even greater Woman Miss Ami Vega.

“Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.”

Kitsuné Delivers…

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Let’s talk about ill nu nu. Let’s talk about ill nu nu. Let’s talk about all the new things, sexy new things, I got for you. It’s super ILL nu nuuuu. (Appologies to Salt n Pepa). But seriously, kids, you know how much I love nu nu. And this time it just happens to come to us from land of berets, little black dresses and les Gaulois… no, not Bedford Avenue. La France!! And it comes from our Japanese enthusiast friends at Kitsuné. They’ve just put out another great remix compilation for all you aurally needy rabbitos. Look no further, cause these remixes will be sweet Euro music to your long, floppy ears. You can purchase all 15 great tracks on iTunes for $9.99, buy a bottle of Bordeaux (or Pinot Gris if you prefer), throw on your best stripy boat neck and rave out all night long to this killer iller remix album.

Here’s a quick run down of a few of the select jams off this great mix. First off, I’m a huge fan of Étienne de Crécy and his b-a-n-a-n-a-s live light show. Plus, this pioneer of French Touch paired with Boys Noize Records’ Les Petits Pilous is sure to be a banger, and guess what, “Hannukah” is just that! It makes me think of the plastic 80s Fashion Plates I used to mix and match as a wee cottontail jumping off the crayon colored page and raging and/or having an intense walk off with robot versions of the Thunder Cats. That may make no sense to many of you. But just listen to the song then try and fight me on that one.

My next pick is a remix by Britain’s own, and one of my favorites, Siden. This time Sinden gets his talented hands on fellow Pepsi DJ, and Cottontail fam, A-Trak’s “Say Whoa.”  Personally, the beat comes in off the bat and I wanna say “daaaaaaamn” cause all I can think of is voguing divas like Pepper la Beja duck walking the night away. Then I remember I’ve just imagined this dirty rave ball but instead of being sad it’s not real I’m thrilled because I can just start the track over and relive it all again. WIN!!

Lastly, I am super smitten with Blatta and Inesha Street Meat remix of MayBB’s “Touring in New York.” I mostly love it because of the New York street meat reference. Call me crazy, but it’s high time everyone’s local Hallal cart got an international shout out. So, malto grazie, guys. Italians everywhere are proud. Also, the down change and subsequent “kettle coming to a digital boil” sound is pretty epic. And, Benny Benassi is like a Tiffany lamp: a little crazy but he never goes out of style. Also, your grandmother probably loves him.

So, voila, mes petits lapins! The new stuff for you to gobble up and enjoy!!
