Yet Another Good Time

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Not a big surprise, but this past Monday at Sway was a blast and a hlaf as usual. Electric Punanny, although missing Ms. Jasmine Solano, was a rousing success even though the rain tried to keep us down. Here are some choice flicks from the night, shot by the always charming, always quick to capture great moments, King Texas. Check out more edits on her site here. Enjoy and have a loverly Wednesday night! See you soon, rabbittos!!

Open Your Bunny Ears… It’s New Music Tuesday!

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Put on them headphones rabbittos! It’s time for your first Cottontail Music Tuesday post, so let’s start it off with a BANG, shall we?

.

We’re not travelling too far to start; this girl is straight from our very own Queens, NY.  Getting her fame from Lil Wayne’s failed concoction of hip-hoppers, Young Money, Nicki Minaj is that bitch that can tell me what to do whenever she pleases.  The music game emptied their dumpster that was Lil Kim, Trina, etc.’s trash to dump on us the sassy stylings of Miss Minaj.  Her most recent collabo is with the burnt out diva we all love to watch, yes, the “MiMi” herself, Mariah Carey in her song “Up Out My Face.”  (Pause) I’m addressing this MiMi ‘emancipation’ once and for all, homegirl cannot think that her birth certificate was altered from 1970 to 1990 just because she created this busty, botoxed princess known as “Mimi.”  Alright now back to my boo, I am going to hold back from “Up Out My Face”-ing Miz Minaj for remixing this song with MiMi, just because she’s not your traditional female rapstar (a la the aforementioned Trina, Lil Kim, etc. sex-porno-symbol rapper).  Minaj works the quirk in her performance, hilariously contorting her face underneath her Lolita-Katy-Perry weave-y luscious black bangs… I mean what? It’s not like I could talk about her hair with 95% of the thesaurus.  She has previously been featured on the Young Money debut CD (I’ll try and refrain from not saying the word “flop” in this sentence… oh too late) We Are Young Money.  She has also been featured in the song “Knockout” on Lil Wayne’s most recent album (ahem, flop… sorry Weezy, try better next time?) Rebirth, but her and Weezy have recently KILLED IT on his recent mixtape No Ceilings where they collabo to mix Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams.”  Out of the horse’s mouth herself, I give Miz Minaj “the thumbs up like I’m hailin a yellow cab.”  Check out the video for “Up Out My Face” and check out the hilarity that ensues as Minaj is definitely playing up her mockery of the same “stand-there-and-move-my-arms-awkwardly” B.S. that Mariah always gives in her performances. LOVE.  Now check out my boo workin’ it in the video for “Up Out My Face” and click here to view full video:

Up next bunnies, we’ve got the new M.I.A. music video… no wait, is that RIHANNA?!  It sure is, rabbittos!  Princess RiRi is finally BACK with her latest music video for her new single “Rude Boy.”  This new track, probably the only redeemable song from her latest CD Rated R, is reminiscent of her Good Girl Gone Bad days (flashback sing-along break: -ella, -ella, ay, ay, ayyy).  The video is even better than the song as she brings it with the color, shape, décor, CRAZY!!!  This video is jut pop-pop-pop art with a touch of bestiality (MEOWWWW RIHANNA)!  RiRi is just getting busy left and right and keeping my eyes busy with boys, Carrera sunglasses, her swinging hips and tousled Jamaican inspired skirt.  I feel like I’m back in high school geometry with this stuff, just shapes, shapes, and more shapes!  Needless to say Rihanna is Chris Brown’ing our asses right now as she screams for us to “Take it, take it, love me, love me,” and I certainly do now!  Keep workin’ it girl and we’ll forget about “Russian Roulette” and “Hard” as consolation. Check out the video here, and check out these screensHOTs:

Album Review: Daniel Merriweather “Love & War”

.

love-and-war.jpg

.

Holy Mark Ronson, Batman!  The producer is back!  Daniel Merriweather’s debut stateside CD is crazy soulful and noteworthy… hence it’s appearance on ya’llz favorite site!  Merriweather swiftly croons his way through your ears, down your throat and finds a nice cozy home in that heart of yours as he sings of unrequited love and heartbreak.  But fear not, lil bunnies, this is not one of those sappy, emo, and soon to be top-shelf at your local Hot Topic CDs, oh no, no, no!  Merriweather is sophisticated, mature, and incredibly touching as he backs his golden pipes with Ronson’s all-too familiar (and brilliant) brass instruments on most tracks and a tender piano backing (“For Your Money“) on others.  Now while you’re blasting “For Your Money” (the opening song) and continuing your reading, you know you’re dying that the Australian-native singer is dedicating his first song to our lovely lady, New York!  Wait, clarification, I mean the city and not this piece of… well…

.

WHO?! ME?!

.

tiffany-pollard-sex-tape.0.0.0x0.307x460.jpg

Anyway… what is even better than Merriweather’s overall performance is his chosen collaborations on Love & War: Adele & Wale.  Now, I know Wale seems like a one-hit-wonder/check-ya-later rapper,  BUT I still held out for him, and his song with Merriweather “Change,” is proving me to be a smart rabbito!  From the beat, to the piano, to Merriweather’s swiftness through his lyrics, Wale just puts the cherry on top of this culturally-charged sundae!  Overall, Merriweather and Ronson killed it with this debut, and hopefully he is well-received by the bubblegum-pop drowning listeners of America.  Listen to: For Your Money, Change, & Chainsaw.

The Big Life… How Sweet it Is

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Oh man- if you’re like me you loved Look Who’s Talking, Look Who’s Talking Too and Look Who’s Talking Now. Don’t even pretend like you had that much to do between 1989 and 1993 that you couldn’t squeeze in a few delightful hours of John Travolta, talking babies and dogs, courtesy of Amy Heckerling, and of course, the glowing Kirstie Alley.

Picture 15.png

Kirstie, Kirstie, Kirstie. Oh goodness, gracious. We all know your trials and tribulations with weight and recently it’s become all anyone likes to talk about when it comes to you. Wah wah. Just cause in like 20 some odd years girl went from this to this.

kirsty-allen-before-after1.jpg

Who the fuck cares, pardon my French. But seriously, when a woman this great and crazy is involved- let’s focus on the good shtuff. She was the one the only Gladys Leeman in one of my all time favorites Drop Dead Gorgeous. I mean, this woman’s Midwestern cunt-ery is not to be equaled. She really is pretty amazing. Just look.

Picture 24.png

She was always funny and cute and now she’s fat. The point of all this untimely info is that Miss Now Extra Large Thang has a new show. So much for Fat Actress, we’re talking The Big Life. It’s a reality series on A&E about how homegirl is gonna lose the weight she managed to gain back since 2006. The premise sounds awful and the ads on the side of bus lean-to’s are not cute. So, being the deft investigator I am, I looked it up and found this pretty damn funny trailer for the show. Check it out, on youtube by clicking the pic below and check out a pretty cute lil angel/devil shtick on the A&E site.

Picture 42.png

The show debuts Sunday March 21st at 10PM. Get excited for some jokes and a lot of funnies from this funny lady. She may be large but she has no delusions about it. BAM. I’m involved. I suggest you get involved too.

Pebbles’ DJ Profiles Presents… Melo X!!!

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010
Guess who’s back, back again? Pebbles’ back- to tell you all about some DJ friends!! That’s right pebblitos, here we are for another rousing DJ interview. This time around it’s Electric Punanny front man and super sweet Melo X. This man has it all, the skills, the taste, the musical talent and he’s cute as hell. Clearly you are involved already, and if you aren’t here you go! This is sure to brighten your rainy day! Without further ado, Mr. Melo X!!

.
When you don’t want to “go in to work” what makes you go out there and do it? Do you feel like DJing is a joy or a bit of a task? Basically, is DJing your lover or your spouse?

DJing is my lover.  We make magic in the club. We get the party popping and the punannies jumping.

How old were you when you first DJ’d a party officially or unofficially?

I was 17 and it was a sweaty Brooklyn basement party. My cousin was having a party cause he was leaving for college. He heard I was a DJ and hit me and my friend up about rocking it out. I’ll never forget it because we were very nervous but as soon as we got in the groove we were unstoppable.

awful1.jpg

(hopefully, it was a little less sweaty than this… hopefully)

What’s your first music memory?

Playing on my rainbow colored piano that my mom bought me. I was a child so I wasn’t playing anything important just learning about sounds and the concept of “do re mi fa sol la ti do.”

toy-piano.jpg

How did you get/come up with your name?

My first name was Chico. My best friends at the time were Spanish and that’s what they called me. As I began rapping I realized a Jamaican named Chico might be too corny. So since I had my name in all my rhymes I had to come up with a name that sounded the same. My friend and I sat down and went through names out until i said X-MeLo, because I was an extreme guy but also mellow. Then my friend said how about “MeLo-X.”  That’s how that came about.

Who has influenced your style?

My style is influenced by my peers.  The people who I’m around everyday. My friends and family.

Any moments out listening to another DJ when you knew you had to be the best you could be?

I feel like that every time at Electric Punanny. When a DJ is on before me and I hear the crowd wilding out I know i have to smash shit.

melobybrooke.jpg

What is the decision making process like from crowd to your head to the
tables?

It’s all about the crowd. I see how they are vibing. I see what songs get them hype. Then I start to control them. I’ll play a certain song that’s in a certain key and is talking about a certain theme and I’ll look for another song just as good in the same key. Or I’ll tell a story. Sometimes I do battles like a love song then a hate song then a love song. I’m all over the place with my thoughts when I DJ.

Any predictions for what or who will blow up next?

Me, of course! This new group called Sonny Moon. They’re dope. Jasmine Solano and Nikki NTU. As far as DJs, I’ll say Will Gates and Mista Ian Jay.

If you had to bring 5 things with you to a desert island and only one could be a record, what would you bring?

J Dilla donuts, laptop, Rubix Cube, SP-505 sampler & a camera.

cube-arty-photo.jpg

What’s the biggest mishap you’ve ever had out at a gig and what did you do to fix it?

The whole set up at this one club was fucked. The only thing that was working was one CD player and an iPod jack. I had my CDs so I DJ’d with a busted CD player and iPod.

If you could tour with one artist alive or dead who would you tour with?

Cold Play. Their music moves me so much. And if I could really get to perform my music how I want, I know their fan base would appreciate it. Their music has a similar vibe to mine. It’s like smooth cord progressions but still edgy at times. I have remixed a lot of their stuff in the past but never put them out.

coldplay_0703.jpg

If you could play any club in history what club would you play?

I would love to DJ at Studio 54 because I feel like at that moment in time when disco was really popping people were slaves to the music. From the rich, the poor, the famous etc. everyone knew they had to be at Studio 54 or try to get in so they could be a slave to that rhythm. I would have loved to have control over that crowd’s emotion at that time. Plus I love the style and fashion of that period.

studio.jpg

.

A lot of times on flyers DJs are billed as “music selectors” but there’s a lot more to it than that. How do DJs influence the direction of music?

The DJ controls the parties and the club. Now a days people don’t buy music. The industry is collapsing because it’s based on the sales of packaged music. Since that is no longer something that controls us we are more hype about going to a event or a party rather than buying a CD. We are part of the “Download Culture.” Everything is a click away. The only thing we can’t download is the feeling of being in a club or arena with hundreds of people vibing out to music. That’s where the DJ comes in. That’s why even though we’ve been talking about a recession, the numbers of party goers hasn’t lowered but instead, in some cases, doubled. Especially with hip hop music. It all started with the DJ.

How did you and Roxy meet?

We met through Myspace. I saw her on somebodies page and I hit her up about a party. After that we first sat down and spoke at Soho323 back in 2006. I cant remember what we spoke about but it was early in the night when no one was there. Since then we’ve been close buddies. I’ve worked with her on her music and she has helped me in my DJ career. Roxy’s the Queen Bitch of NYC nightlife.

meloinroxy.jpg

Et voila, bunnies! There’s just a little bit more you know about Melo X and if you want to know even more, check him out on his own blog, here! Happy Tuesday!

xoxo
