Tuesday, May 17th, 2011“I’ll Never Be Like Barbie, Barbie Doesn’t Have Bruises”
Tuesday, May 17th, 2011Ah, Nancy Spungen. A forever 20 year old punk princess who, although never musically inclined herself, will forever go down in the annals of rock & roll and punk history for being the nastiest, craziest Yoko the world has ever known. In case you don’t know who she is, Nancy was Sex Pistols’ bassist Sid Vicious’ worse half for two years until her untimely stabbing murder (maybe or maybe not by Sid’s own hand) in room 100 of the Chelsea Hotel in October of 1978. She may have been crusty, schizophrenic, a drug addled teenager, a star fucker, a maniac, a confused child, a murdered martyr to the scene and a sometime wackado. But, the girl did her damn thing and had insane style, much aped by many a badass chick to this day. Here are a few choice images of this enigma for your viewing pleasure. Everyone hated her. But that was her drag. Get involved.

It’s like Dubliners, but Longer… An Ode to the 90s
Monday, May 16th, 2011Strap in, kids. There’s lots of 90s here for your Tuesday AM boring stretch at work. Flicks, words, memories. I’ve got it all for you. So grab a cup of Joe and get the french toast involved. Amaze balls.
.
Ah the 90s - How can you describe something so wonderful and life shaping, bad ass and joy inducing, nostalgic and yet totally relevant? Well, I sure as shit don’t know but I’m gonna give it my best go. The 90s were all that AND a bag of chips! But seriously…
.
The motherfucking 90s, man. What a crazy ass time. I was a young girl learning about the ways of the world and how thankful am I that I learned from Bill Clinton how to tell the truth,
from Eddie Veder how to spell “pro-choice” and own the fact that some of us have weirdball voices and that’s more than OK it’s boss,
from Gianni Versace how to rock the fuck out of a gold safety pin,
from Nickelodean not to use gak as an LA Looks hair gel substitute,
to respect old women like Linda Ellerbee if they know what’s up and can rock the fuck out of a Lez-a Minelli cropped cut,
and of course how to whistle the theme from Doug,
from Austin Powers that the teeth don’t make the man,
from Soundgarden that a fucked up and tripped out video will make people remember a song forever,
from Cher Horowitz always to remain picky about shoes (and men),
from Beavis & Butthead how fishing doesn’t necessarily require water (but at very least a couch),
from AOL ultimate dial up frustration when I knew all my friends were waiting for me in Legends of the Hidden Temple chat room,
from Bill & Ted that we should always be excellent to each other and to always party on,
from Tom Hanson, H.T. Ioki and Doug Penhall, to always wear one strategic earring,
from Hypercolor not to use a hair dryer even though it seemed like a good idea,
from the Spice Girls that foam platforms were totally rad and that “Girl Power” is a perfectly appropriate response to anything,
from Suzanne Somers that the Thighmaster was better as a hat rack than an exercise aid,
from Kurt Cobain… oh man there is a lot I learned from this man, but for the sake of my sanity and your attention span let’s keep it light and short and leave it at: unwashed hair is totally amazing when owned up to and unabashedly crusty and there is a line between crazy bitch and psychotic succubus. Also, to do what you do because you want to do it and to do it for yourself and for those who matter. And that it’s more than OK to be a raging weirdo. And to always answer first to yourself.
.
There are so many other things I learned. How to dress (velvet, frosted lipstick, smiley faces, chunky heels,
belled sleeves, gelled tendrills, knee socks, body suits, ugly florals, combat boots,
overalls, furry hats, tiny sunglasses, kilts, bike shorts, and one of my personal style commandments, the art of over accessorizing
- if you were around, you remember). And of course what music to listen to (L7,
Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Live, No Doubt, the Breeders, Rage, Alice in Chains, the Chili Peppers,
The Offspring, 311, Luscious Jackson, Jane’s Addiction, Alanis… again, if you were there, you remember).
.
The point is, it’s 2011 and it’s the beginning of a whole new decade. And 1990 was fucking 21 years ago. How nutty is that shit? It’s high time we as young people embraced this decade that made us who we are and give it the homage it deserves. In case you little boogers have been sleeping under a rock, I, Pebbles van Peebles, have started the bangin new 90s weekly throwdown on Thursdays at Sway, called Reality Bites, starring Michna, Nicky Digital and me!
The fashion is at very least amusing and at very best annihilating, the music is always the later and the drinks are strong. It’s pretty much my favorite party by now and we’re showing no signs of stopping. And, just to get you amped up on this week’s edition here is the illest 90s megamix in the history of the intranetz which I recently discovered hidden way down in the depths of my iTunes. It’s by your favorite and mine, the unfuckwitable DJ Spinbad (the mix was originally on cottontail fam DJ Soul’s site in 2009). Not only a rousing salute to an excellent decade and the bastions of its pop culture history but the super fine mixing and mashing and witty combination of drops and lyrics will surely floor you. To even attempt to list all of the movies sampled would be an exercise in my own 90selfindulgence. I know I’ve been listening to this sucker on repeat for at least a month now. The night has been going strong since my birthday blowout jump off in December and we keep it fresh with open bars and guest hosts. And starting next month we’ll be welcoming guest DJs as well. If you’ve popped on by you know how real this biting night can get, and if not, here are a few flicks from the man himself, Nicky Digital, to get you going. Be sure to come see us this Thursday and come prepared, we’ll be wilding out and enjoying some of the best music of the last century. Get the fuck involved, kiddlets. You know I am. The most, to say the very least,
-Pebbles van
Here’s that mix again, get involved.
.Here’s where I’ve been doing for the past 5 months. Enjoy.
