Total Identity Crisis
It’s raining lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) and the last thing I want to do is venture outside to run errands, exercise, grab lunch…whatever. I rather stay warm and dry in the comfort of my own home; cuddle up on the couch with a tall glass of delicious virgin limeade and my snuggie and the ever present idiot box.
The first thing I do is turn on MTV, as a lover of music and music videos (the good one’s at least) It seems like a no brainer that that’d be a go to channel. Unfortunately that is not the case. Anyone who isn’t living under a rock knows that MTV is known more for its various “reality” shows and challenges resulting in one winner being hundreds of thousands of dollars richer than before filming started, than anything else. Gone are the days where world premiere videos, album releases, band breakups, band make-ups, and breakthrough music technology and styles are featured on the channel. Now they get extended commercial segments and perhaps a video or two plays while the credits to The Duel or A Shot at Love roll. My, how the music video has fallen.
While I must admit, the quality of said reality shows has gone up. With the introduction of shows like From G’s to Gents, The Girls of Hedsor Hall, and T.I.’s show about redeeming himself and helping the youth whose name I forget and will not look up…a more positive spin has been put on the channel. Instead of chronicling the lives of the affluent and entitled, these shows are more about affirmation, character growth, and positive role models. While I respect the fact that MTV is embracing Obama’s message of service to the community and “change”. Why can’t they just play music? If I want cooking shows I turn on the Food Network. If I want fashion advice, welll, I have the Style Network for that. Daily sports highlights? Hello ESPN and Sports Center. C’mon MTV…let’s take this channel back to its roots…ANYONE WITH ME?!?!?!
