Whew! Two posts in one day, I must be bunny-loving today. I was gonna wait to write about the return of the Scissor Sisters with a full-album review later this week, but I wanted to treat ya’ll to a little sneak peek of the European group’s return with their latest album, Night Work. The peek I’m peeping right now is one of their first singles off the record, “ Fire With Fire.” Let me tell you, this is musical ecstasy! After seeing the Sisters tear up the stage at South by Southwest this past March, I knew the forthcoming album would be explosive, but I was not ready for this caliber of melodic bliss. Check out the track here, and scroll down to view, ogle, and drool over the band (especially lead singer Jake Shears).

Hey ya’ll, hope everyone survived last night’s riot at the Sounds Like Paper event. The madness that ensues when people are given free live music! Ms. Cottontail made it up to you later in the night, however, and provided the bouncing NYers with a free, exclusive show at Polar Lounge, and boy did she throw down! Anyway, I hope this isn’t a “too soon” moment, but today’s New Music Tuesday is all about Drake’s debut full-length album.

So I admittedly felt pretty stupid yesterday when I look out my window as I here screams coming from the Union Square Best Buy down the block from my building and had no idea what (or who) it was for. Lo and behold, the Drake hysteria started there as he signed copies of his new CD at the entertainment store. I say I admittedly felt stupid because I had no idea his CD was dropping yesterday, BUT to be fair, how long have we been waiting for this CD, I mean reaaally? The actual happening of the release seemed as promising as the release of an Arrested Development movie, right!? Well well well, I immediately hopped on my computer and put my ears to WORK as I cruised through the CD entitled Thank Me Later. I’ve always had respect for Drake because he’s unlike other rappers in the game today, because he can hold his own throughout an entire song where he doesn’t need a vocalist to carry the chorus, I mean boy can SING! Sure, Kanye does this, but before I let him finish I gotta say that Drake has one of the best voices in the rap game of all time… hehe. Thank Me Later starts with a Drake and Alicia Keys collabo called “ Fireworks,” which is a beautifully melodic track. Little did I know that this track is a precursor to the rest of the album, where most of the songs are of a slower tempo with an entrancing beat, a la “ Fireworks,” “ Shut It Down (feat. The Dream),” “ The Resistance,” and “ Cece’s Interlude,” which all have sounds reminiscent of Kid Cudi’s music. What separates Drake from Cudi, or any other rapper for that matter, is that while he has a soft, melodic singing voice, his rap voice commands the track over the head bopping beats like in “ Thank Me Now,” “ Miss Me (feat. Lil Wayne),” and “ Fancy (feat. T.I. and Swizz Beats).” Looking at that last list of tracks, a note on the collaborations featured on this CD must be made. Drake calls on Alicia Keys, T.I., Swizz Beats, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, and (my favorite collaboration) Nicki Minaj. In “ Up All Night,” Drake again commands the track with his rhymes, but then Minaj enters and exudes the same moxie as Drake.

All in all, I better find Drake soon, because I don’t know if I can thank him later for this album, I gotta thank him now.

Ah well, well, well, nice to see you today. I guess I had to take a break from catching an abundance of rays down here in the Jersey Shore to see how the bunnies are doing… the things I do for you hoppers. As promised, I am writing today about the performance-forward Lady GaGa and her latest creation for the music video to her summer smash “ Alejandro.” Now I know the lyrics sing about men like “Alejandro” “Fernando” and “Roberto,” but in the music, she is mainly preoccupied with the likes “ Madonna” “ Liza” and “ Bowie.” Yes, rabbittos, she manages to call on three legends (among a multitude of other influences) and masterfully craft them into one epic 8-minute cinematographic journey. Before you continue reading, I implore you to watch the video for yourself, so click here.
-
-
And so we begin. The video’s central preoccupations are definitely war and religion, and the homoeroticism associated with both (especially the former). While I originally thought GaGa would continue the story of Paparazzi-Telephone that would result in her escaping to Mexico to be hit on by countless sexy Spaniards, I was beyond thrilled with the veering away from the possible trilogy, and very pleased with the end product. Directed by fashion photographer Steven Klein, the video is aesthetically beautiful as any scene could be a spread in any fashion magazine. I find it shocking that this is Klein’s first move into moving pictures, because he clearly has talent, and I look forward to seeing his future pieces.
-
GaGa only casts her male dancers in the video and couples them with each other instead of using her female dancers to pair them, which is where the homoerotic themes are initially seen. While they are in traditional male roles, a la the military, they are tweaked with female tendencies as they wear heels or fishnet stockings or little-to-no clothing. GaGa, initially seen as an empress-like character, sits pretty with an innovative headpiece furnished with laced goggles seen below…
-
-
She watches her homoerotic heroes dance for her below her perch and fidgets with frustration, which is where we begin to understand how she wishes to romanticize with these gentlemen, but clearly cannot because they are doing that with each other. GaGa’s loneliness is a common theme throughout the video as she is frequently separate from her masculine back-ups, even when they are together. For example, in one of the main dance sequences, which I have admittedly mastered thank you very much, we see the men clad in black (including their hair) and GaGa all in white (including her hair) as seen below…
-
-
What can be gathered from this theme, applying to current events, is the commentary she is offering to the recent “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. She exhibits the strength of these homosexually-portrayed men in hopes to combat the traditional notion to associate homosexuality with weakness or disease.
-
-
Then the religious references come into play as GaGa takes on a priestess role in her cross-ridden garb. As she takes on this role, she is no longer in sync with her men as they surround her and begin to throw her around. The commentary provided here suggests an uprising to the Church for bashing and shunning homosexuality, and again highlights the strength that the homosexual population has even when they are tried to be silenced.
-
-
As for her influences, above we can see a suggestively Liza Minelli influence for this segment of the video as she clothes herself in a black-collared jumpsuit with a short bob.
-
-
Up next, Madonna. GaGa has frequently been defined as this generation’s Queen of Pop, Madonna, and she craftily illustrates this through parts in the video…
-
-
-
And lastly, well the last influence I’ll cover here, as there are plenty more… is David Bowie. This is probably my favorite part of the video. GaGa stands alone on a stage, with a thin, wooden cross behind her only wearing a leather jacket, black underwear and shades. She even moves with the Bowie style as the microphone has turned to her lover, which is evident in her caring caresses…
-
-
-
Ultimately, I give this video two-thumbs up. It may draw from other artists, which lead people to deem GaGa a “copy-cat,” but what she has done is effortlessly blended a plethora of legends and created an artistic giant of a legend. Kudos, GaGa, Kudos. Here are some more shots from the video…

So as I rolled out of bed Tuesday morning, like I always do, I crawled over to my computer to peruse iTunes because it’s New Music Tuesday, a personal weekly holiday. HOLY HELL, I was so taken aback by all the new music that I almost couldn’t handle myself–and I managed to get some music that doesn’t come out for a couple of weeks, I’m keeping how I managed that to myself he he. Ranging from Christina Aguilera’s triumphant return with her new album Bionic to Grace Potter and the Nocturnal’s latest self-titled album to (GASP) Uffie’s DEBUT CD Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans. As I’m sure all of you can imagine, I lost my shiiiit. Not to mention the premiere of Lady GaGa’s latest video for her summer smash “ Alejandro,” which will be covered this coming weekend as I spend my weekend under the Snookin’ Sun of the Jersey Shore in Long Beach Island.
-
Not going to bore you all with several full-length reviews, although puh-leeze you know you want it. Instead, I’m going to tell you what to look out for on each album.
-
Let’s start with Christina shall we? Now I really do not understand why she’s getting so much flack for her latest CD Bionic, because there is some good material on the disc, no matter how “unoriginal” it may be… what is originality anyways? KIDDING, duh. Could she have received criticism because it so ironically (or bionically… hehe) debuted the same day as GaGa’s Alejandro video where the Pop universe couldn’t handle and appreciate two blonde starlets simultaneously releasing new material. Come on, people! Share the love a little, eh? It doesn’t always have to be a Celebrity Deathmatch (REMEMBER that show?! Oh how I miss it). ANYway, back to X-tina’s latest… Some of my favorite tracks are “ Woohoo” featuring the rambunctious Nicki Minaj (PS–check out Lil Kim’s Twitter page for a good laugh at the demise of the former “Queen Bee” of the game). This song has potential summer status, so fun! Reminds me of Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss”… but in a good way, duh. “ Prima Donna” is also a track worthy of downloading and bouncing to, especially for the ladies, this song is definitely for YOU as she sings “I’m a Prima Donna I can rule the world.” “ Elastic Love,” a song that has received mix reviews, was produced and features M.I.A. (PS–who is READY for Maya?!) and while Christina certainly feels out of place in the track, M.I.A. does her best do commandeer a rescue ship to save the electronically-drowning Christina… as best as she can. Essentially, M.I.A. should have saved this song for her own collection. Then of course Christina has to break it down with a few empowering ballads. What’s this album’s “ Beautiful,” you ask? That would have to be “ Lift Me Up,” which is very tempered and highlights Christina’s powerhouse vocals. Sorry to end on a bad note, Christina, but my “Final Thought” a la Jerry Springer for you is that you’re a mother now, sweetheart, it’s time to drop the oversexed act, which can be found in the CD’s raunchy track “ Sex for Breakfast.” I mean COME ON! Your CHILD does not want to hear about Sex for Breakfast, he just wants his GD Cheerios!! Peace and Love, Christina, I honestly do like your CD.

Well, as Jay-Z says, onto the next one! Up next I’ve got the return of Grace Potter & The Nocturnals with their new self-titled CD. Starting out on a very ear-grabbing “UH!” this CD certainly packs a punch from beginning to end, keeping me up late at night listening to it over again (get it?! Nocturnal!!). The guitar is what I am most impressed with from the Vermont-based band’s latest CD as it’s funky in parts and tantalizing elsewhere… just a beautiful combination. And I GUESS Grace Potter’s gritty, yet pure, vocals don’t hurt either. Definitely check-out the opening track of the CD “ Paris (Ooh La La),” along with “ Only Love,” and (since it is time-appropriate) “ Hot Summer Night,” which actually isn’t about what you think it is. Check it ouuut.

Lastly, I give you a familiar face and friend to the Cottontail family. Yes, Uffie has made her official CD debut. Well, actually, she WILL make her debut next Tuesday, I just got it a little early to give you bunnies something to look forward to. While we are all very familiar with certain tracks like “ Pop the Glock,” “ Ready to Uff,” “ MCs Can Kiss,” “ First Love,” and “ Brand New Car,” there are some BRAND NEW tracks worth anticipating. One of her more recent popular singles, “ ADD SUV,” which features Pharrell is always a personal favorite of mine. What’s even better is that if you buy the iTunes Deluxe Edition you get the Armand Van Helden Vocal Mix of the track, which is a dope remix, definitely worth the extra few bucks for the DeluXXX. The original, catchy, and authentically hilarious Uffie can finally regain the genre that Ke$ha (I’m not bolding her name for a reason) so horrendously tarnished with her much-anticipated debut CD. This is why Uffie is superior to everyone’s favorite love-to-hate musician (term used very loosely) Ke$ha, because Ke$ha can quickly pump out a CD, while Uffie has been releasing tracks for years now, yet waited for the prime time to release her full-length debut. The beats are inventive and playful next to Uffie’s vocal versatility where she switches from her light-as-a-feather vocals, as heard in “ Give It Away,” to her hard, lamenting tone, as heard in “ MCs Can Kiss.” So many of us have been looking forward to this release, and trust me, it is WORTH THE WAIT!!

Phew, I don’t know about you but I am EXHAUSTED. JERSEY SHORE HERE I COME.

Talk to ya’ll later bunnies! Stay tuned for Ale-ale-jandro review!

Hello all! As we’re all feeling the post-Memorial Day blues in hopes that the coming weekend will be another three days instead of the usual two, I bring you the sweet sounds of Marina and the Diamonds. Hmmm. How to characterize the sound of the Welsh Miss Marina Lambrini Diamandis? Well, on a glamorous bus ride back to this pretty-pretty city of New York, I came up with the perfect formula… she hands down is on the same wavelength as Florence and the Machine with sounds of Regina Spektor, Lady GaGa, and Blondie. I’m waving my hands around to this new wave sound to get your bunny ears and eyes to pay attention to me while I beg you to be captivated by Marina’s Diamond… hehe you caught the sexual innuendo in that, too, didn’t you?
Her debut album, The Family Jewels, was just released Stateside last week, and I’ve been bouncing to it since. While listening to the album in its entirety, as I have said before, I immediately thought of Florence and the Machine, which both excited me and disappointed me. It disappointed me because of the striking similarities of the band names; HOWEVER, while “The Machine” in Florence and the Machine refers to her back-up band, “The Diamonds” are Marina’s fans as she has said in concert, “I’m Marina. You are the diamonds.” BRILLIANT (like a diamond, get it? eh? eh?)!
Some of my favorite tracks are definitely “ Shampain,” “ Hollywood,” and “ Rootless,” but I leave it up to you to pick your faves! The album is now in stores and on iTunes. Get involved!!
See you at the cluuuub, where we can share some “Shampain”!!
